Zodiac Signs in March: Pisces or Aries

March holds two zodiac signs: Pisces first, then Aries. The catch is that the handover between them does not sit on one fixed calendar date the way most birthday tables suggest.

Across the site's 1900-2030 boundary table, the Pisces-to-Aries switch lands on March 19, 20 or 21, depending on the birth year.

I went looking for "March 21" in those numbers and found it had not happened in US Eastern time since 1979 - the mug was describing my grandparents' calendar, not mine.

March Has Two Signs: Pisces, Then Aries

The clean split: Pisces runs from March 1 up to the switch, and Aries runs from the switch to the end of the month and on into April. March 1 through 18 is Pisces in every year in the site's table. March 22 through 31 is Aries in every year in the site's table.

Those two stretches are not in doubt at all, and most readers can stop there.

If you were born on March 1-18, you have Pisces's exact dates by year. If you were born on March 22-31, you have Aries's exact dates by year. The friction lives on the three days in between.

The March Switch Lands on March 19, 20, or 21

Here is the three-day window, stated plainly:

Date in March Sign How certain What decides it
March 1-18 Pisces Settled Nothing to check
March 19 Almost always Pisces - Aries only in 2020, 2024 and 2028 Year-dependent Your birth year
March 20 Either sign - the most common switch day Year- and time-dependent Birth year, birth time and time zone
March 21 Aries in every modern year - Pisces only for births before 1980 in US Eastern time Year-dependent Your birth year
March 22-31 Aries Settled Nothing to check

March 20 is the common case. It accounts for 92 of the 131 years in the site's boundary table. March 21 was the historical case - all of it concentrated in the first half of the twentieth century.

March 19 is the new case, arriving in 2020 and repeating in 2024 and 2028. The pattern holds through leap years after that.

Here are the numbers:

| Switch day | Years out of 131 | When it happens | |---|---|---|---| | March 20 | 92 | The ordinary case across the whole table | | March 21 | 36 | Concentrated in the first half of the twentieth century, last seen in US Eastern time in 1979 | | March 19 | 3 | New - 2020, 2024 and 2028, repeating in leap years after that |

No other March day is ever the switch. The boundary wanders across three consecutive days, but it does not skip around.

Why This Boundary Is the Widest in the Calendar

Aries does not start on a date somebody picked. It starts at the March equinox, one of four seasonal markers that anchor the zodiac wheel. The other three open Cancer, Libra and Capricorn at the June solstice, the September equinox and the December solstice.

Because the equinox is an astronomical moment and the calendar is a counting system, the two drift against each other. The March equinox has the widest modern date window of the four seasonal markers, which is why Aries is the only sign whose start can land on three different calendar days. For the mechanism of that drift, see why the equinox date itself moves.

Where "March 21" Came From, and Why It Usually Misses

March 21 is not invented. It was the ordinary case in the first half of the twentieth century, and it is still printed on mugs, in birthday books and in most competitor tables. The convention stuck even after the underlying equinox moved earlier.

In US Eastern time, the last March 21 switch was 1979. Measured in UTC, the last one was 2007, and the next is projected for 2101. That means a convention that is wrong for everyone born in the last four decades has stopped being a useful shorthand.

Myth vs. fact:

  • Myth: Aries starts March 21.
Fact: It has not started on March 21 in US Eastern time since 1979.

  • Myth: The zodiac dates are fixed.
Fact: The March boundary alone moves across three calendar days.

  • Myth: The equinox is always March 20 or 21.
Fact: It can be March 19, and in 2020 it was March 19 across every mainland US time zone.

  • Myth: Your birth date is enough.
Fact: On the switch day, the time and the time zone decide.

I would rather hand you a three-day window I can defend than a single date that has been wrong for most of living memory.

Born Near the Switch? Three Things That Settle It

If you were born on March 19, 20 or 21, you need three pieces of information to know which sign you have:

  1. Your birth year - because the day moves.
  2. Your birth time - because the switch happens at a moment, not at midnight.
  3. The time zone your birth time was recorded in - because one instant can fall on two different calendar dates depending on where the clock was.

Once you have those three, run them through the zodiac sign calculator. It returns your sign, that year's switch moment and the source line for the data. If your birth time is unknown, the answer stays open at the hour rather than being guessed.

The Aries and Pisces sign pages' own year tables show exactly why - the margin can be fifteen hours or fifteen minutes, and there is no way to know which without the clock.

What Your March Birthday Does Not Tell You

Knowing the month gets you the sign. The sign is a mirror worth looking into, not a forecast about your March.

This page's job ends at the calendar - what Pisces or Aries is said to be like lives on the Pisces and Aries sign pages, and the exact verdict for one birth date and year lives in the calculator.

I do not read daily horoscopes, and I treat the zodiac as a lens rather than a map. Which is exactly why I want the calendar part - the only part that is genuinely checkable - to be right.

Pisces continues back through February's Pisces half. Aries continues forward into where Aries goes next. You can see all 12 signs by month to see how the rest of the calendar splits.

March Zodiac Questions, Answered

Is March 20 a Pisces or an Aries birthday?

Either, and the birth year decides. March 20 is the most common switch day in the site's table, so this is exactly the date where the year and the time matter. Check your birth year in the zodiac sign calculator with your birth time and time zone to get the settled answer.

My birthday is March 21 - am I an Aries?

Yes, in every modern year. The only readers for whom March 21 was still Pisces are those born before 1980 in US Eastern time. If you were born March 21, 1980 or later, you are Aries.

Why do so many charts and books say Aries starts on March 21?

Because it was the ordinary case early in the twentieth century and the convention stuck. The underlying equinox has drifted earlier since, and the printed date did not follow. The last time the equinox actually fell on March 21 in UTC was 2007.

Can the switch really happen as early as March 19?

Yes. It did in 2020 and 2024, it does again in 2028, and it recurs on leap years after that. The 2020 switch was the earliest vernal equinox in the United States in 124 years.

For the pattern and the numbers behind it, see why the equinox date itself moves.

Do I need my birth time to know my March sign?

Only if you were born on the switch day itself. Away from the 19th through 21st, the date alone settles it. March 1-18 is Pisces in every year, and March 22-31 is Aries in every year.

How do I know I have the right answer for my own birth year?

Run the year, date and time through the zodiac sign calculator, and cross-check against the year table on the Aries or Pisces page. Both print the source for the row. If the two agree, you have the settled answer.
