Zodiac Signs in April: Aries or Taurus

April has two zodiac signs: Aries's exact dates by year cover the first part of the month, and Taurus's exact dates by year take over around April 19 or 20.
The exact switch day depends on the birth year, so I use the honest two-day window here and point boundary birthdays to a year-aware checker instead of pretending one date works every time.
I don't read daily horoscopes; I like the zodiac as a mirror, not a map. Even with that light-touch view, I think the calendar answer should be accurate.
The Short Answer: Aries Until the April 19-20 Switch, Then Taurus
Aries covers April 1 through the April 19-20 switch. Its season began back in March. Taurus starts at that switch and continues through April 30, then carries on into May.
The familiar shorthand prints Aries as March 21-April 19 and Taurus as April 20-May 20. That convention gives a quick calendar outline, but it is not a per-year fact.
For someone born away from the boundary, the shorthand works well enough; for an April 19 or April 20 birthday, it can produce the wrong answer because the switch does not land on the same calendar date every year.
So the five-second answer is simple: April begins with Aries and ends with Taurus, with the handover occurring during the April 19-20 window.
April's Two Signs at a Glance
The table shows how April fits between the neighboring months. Aries begins in the second half of March, while Taurus continues into May.
| Sign | Which part of April | Boundary window | Its own dates page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | April 1 through the switch | Starts March 19-21, carried over from March; ends April 19-20 | Aries's exact dates by year |
| Taurus | From the switch through April 30 and on into May | Starts April 19-20; ends May 20-21 | Taurus's exact dates by year |
That means an April birthday is not automatically one sign or the other based only on the month. Most April dates are straightforward, but the two dates around the handover need a closer check. For the adjoining pieces of the calendar, see March's Aries half and where Taurus goes next.
Is April 19 or April 20 the Cutoff?
Both dates are correct in different years. Across 2016-2030, measured by the calendar date in US Eastern time, the Sun entered Taurus on April 19 in 12 of those 15 years. The April 20 switches occurred in 2019, 2023, and 2027, according to the site's canonical ingress table and its cited Eastern-time series.
That distribution is why a chart that always prints April 20 is wrong for many recent birth years. I find the confident single-date charts irritating (mostly because they never ask the one question that matters here: what year were you born?). The printed cutoff is a useful rounding, not a personalized result.
Every sign boundary shifts by about a day from year to year because the solar year does not fit the calendar year evenly and leap day resets the difference; read why the switch date moves by about a day for the explanation.
There is also a time-zone consequence. The switch is one instant, so in several years, including 2018, 2022, 2026, and 2030, it falls on April 19 by the calendar in US Eastern time but April 20 in UTC.
That does not mean the Sun changes signs twice. It means the same moment can carry different calendar dates in different places. A two-day window preserves that distinction without printing a clock time that would be misleading outside its time zone.
Born on April 19 or 20? Check Your Birth Year
For a boundary birthday, the birth year is not an optional detail. In any given year, the Sun entered Taurus on a specific day. If that day was your birthday, Taurus applies after the switch moment and Aries applies before it, so the birth time also matters.
This page deliberately does not resolve an individual date-and-year pair. Use the calculator to check your exact birth year; it asks for the year because the answer can change from one year to another. If your birthday was the switch day for that year, provide your birth time rather than choosing whichever fixed range you saw first.
Which April sign is yours, in three steps
- Is your birthday April 1-18? Aries is settled by the date alone. No birth year is needed for this calendar answer, and you can continue to the Aries dates page.
- Is your birthday April 21-30? Taurus is settled by the date alone. Continue to the Taurus dates page.
- Is your birthday April 19 or April 20? Your birth year determines which side of the annual switch your birthday falls on. If you were born on that year's switch day, your birth time determines whether the birth came before or after the change. Enter the date and year in the zodiac sign calculator rather than trusting a fixed table.
The result stays open until those missing facts are supplied. Readers who want to understand the logic, rather than jump straight to a verdict, can read what it means to be born on a boundary day.
April in the Zodiac Calendar
April sits between two continuing sign periods. Aries carries over from March, crosses most of April, and ends during the April 19-20 window. The neighboring page for March's Aries half shows where that run begins without turning April into a seasonal explainer.
Taurus starts during the same window, fills the rest of April, and continues until the May 20-21 switch. See where Taurus goes next for the following month's portion.
Every calendar month contains parts of two zodiac signs, with one handover between them. To move beyond April and compare the complete sequence, see all 12 signs by month.
April Zodiac Questions, Answered
What zodiac signs are in April?
April contains Aries through the April 19-20 switch, followed by Taurus for the rest of the month.
I was born on April 20 - am I Aries or Taurus?
Usually Taurus, but not always. Across 2016-2030, the switch fell on April 20 in Eastern time in only three years, so use your birth year to check your exact birth year instead of assuming.
My birthday is April 19. Does the year really change the answer?
Yes. In most recent years, the switch itself landed on April 19 in Eastern time, which means your birth time can matter too; the checker can resolve the date using your year rather than guessing a side.
Why do so many sites just say Taurus starts April 20?
A fixed date is easy to print and close enough for a general calendar shorthand. It remains a convention rather than a per-year fact, and it fails in years when the switch lands on April 19, which is why this page gives a two-day window.
Is April 19 or April 20 the last day of Aries?
It is whichever day contains the switch in that particular year. On that day, Aries applies before the switch moment and Taurus after it, so use the zodiac sign calculator for your own birth details.
I know my April sign - where do I read what it actually means?
Read the sign's own page, which includes its dates by year and its boundary checker. This page supplies the calendar answer; the Aries page and Taurus page carry the sign-specific material.
