Zodiac Signs in February: Aquarius or Pisces

February is a two-sign month, but people make it harder than it needs to be.

Aquarius holds the first part of the month, the handover to Pisces falls on February 18 or 19 depending on the birth year, and Pisces holds the rest.

If your birthday is February 29, your sign is Pisces. It is not a boundary case at all.

I don't read daily horoscopes; I like the zodiac as a mirror, not a map. That makes me more interested in getting the date right than attaching a fortune to it.

For February, the useful rule is simple: seventeen certain Aquarius dates, a two-day switch window, then Pisces through February 28 or 29.

The Short Answer: February Is Two Signs

The Sun is in Aquarius from the start of February until the Aquarius-Pisces switch on February 18 or 19. It is in Pisces from that switch through the end of the month. February has 28 days in a regular year and 29 in a leap year, but Pisces does not end when February does.

Here is the date-band version worth keeping:

Your February Birthday, by Date Band

Birth date in February Your sign Do you need your birth year?
February 1-17 Aquarius No - settled by the date alone
February 18 Aquarius or Pisces Yes - this is usually the switch day in recent years, so the year decides, and on the switch day the hour decides
February 19 Pisces in most years Yes - the switch has fallen on this day too, so check the year
February 20 to the end of the month, February 29 included Pisces No - settled by the date alone

Only February 18 and 19 require your birth year. Every other February birthday is settled by the calendar date alone.

For the fuller year-by-year ranges, use Aquarius's exact dates by year or the corresponding Pisces page linked later in this guide. Those pages handle exact sign dates; this one keeps the February split easy to scan.

February 1 Through 17: Aquarius, No Lookup Needed

The Sun entered Aquarius back in January. That earlier switch falls on January 19 or 20, so February opens with the Sun already well inside the Aquarius date window.

Across every year in our table, February 1 through 17 belongs to Aquarius. There is no edge case in this stretch, regardless of the birth year, hour, or time zone. If your birthday falls anywhere in those seventeen days, you can stop checking.

Readers interested in the part of the sign that falls before February can see January's Aquarius half. For the complete boundary record rather than a month-level answer, go to Aquarius's exact dates by year.

Seventeen dates are now off the worry list.

The February 18-19 Switch: Where Aquarius Ends and Pisces Begins

Across every year in the site's table from 1900 through 2030, the Sun's entry into Pisces has landed on February 18 or February 19 in US Eastern terms. No other date occurs. That makes the boundary a stable two-day window, not a date that wanders unpredictably through the month.

In the recent double-sourced stretch, the switch fell on February 18 in every year carrying a date from 2017 through 2030. In 2016, it fell on February 19. These records come from our year-by-year boundary table, cross-checked against published ephemeris tables.

The day moves because the calendar year and solar year are not the same length, so the switch drifts and leap day resets it; the sibling guide explains why zodiac sign dates change every year.

Why, then, do so many fixed tables print "Pisces from February 19"? They choose one date to represent every year. In most recent years, the actual switch was one day earlier.

This distinction matters only if you were born on February 18 or 19. Your birth year first identifies which date carried the switch. If your birthday was on that year's switch day, your birth time then decides which side of the boundary applies.

I will not guess from a fixed chart.

February 29: You Are a Pisces, and It Is Not a Cusp

A February 29 birthday is Pisces. Every leap year. There are no exceptions in the site's table.

The reason is reassuringly ordinary: February 29 is nowhere near the Aquarius-Pisces boundary. The switch into Pisces never occurs later than February 19, placing February 29 at least ten days after it. Pisces continues into the third week of March, so its far edge is roughly three weeks away in the other direction.

February 29 is the 60th day of a leap year. Within the Pisces date window, it sits in the middle rather than at either edge.

When I first went through the boundary table, I expected leap day to be the tricky date (the phrase makes it sound exceptional). The result was the opposite. Ordinary-looking February 18 needed a year, while February 29 produced an immediate answer.

Myth vs. Fact: The Leap-Day Zodiac

What people assume What actually happens
A leap-day birthday has no sign, or half a sign It is Pisces every leap year, just like any other late-February date
February 29 is a cusp date The nearest boundary is at least ten days away; the relevant boundary dates are February 18 and 19
Leap year shifts everyone's sign It nudges the switch day inside the February 18-19 window, which matters only for birthdays on those dates
Leap-day babies get assigned a sign only every four years The Sun's position on February 29 is not in doubt in any year when that date occurs
February 29 is the strangest birthday in the month astrologically It is one of the most certain; February 18 and 19 are the dates that need a lookup

Leap day does affect where the switch settles inside its two-day window, as covered in why zodiac sign dates change every year. That is a February 18 or 19 question, not a February 29 question.

The next leap days are in 2028 and 2032. Anyone born on either February 29 has the same clear month-level answer: Pisces.

February 20 to the End of the Month: Pisces, and It Keeps Going

From February 20 through the end of the month, the Sun is in Pisces in every year in the site's table. That includes February 28 in an ordinary year and February 29 in a leap year. No birth-year lookup is required anywhere in this stretch.

The Pisces window does not stop at the month line. It continues through most of March, which is why February and March birthdays can fall under the same sign. The where Pisces goes next guide handles the far boundary without pulling March's separate date question into this page.

How to Check Your Own February Birthday

You can settle most February birthdays without a tool. Follow this decision path:

Decision Path: Three Steps to Your February Sign

  1. Is your birthday between February 1 and 17? Your sign is Aquarius. No birth year is needed; use Aquarius's exact dates by year if you want the full sign-date record.
  2. Is your birthday February 20 or later, including February 29? Your sign is Pisces. No birth year is needed; see Pisces's exact dates by year for the complete range.
  3. Is your birthday February 18 or 19? Your birth year decides which of those two dates carried the switch.
  4. Look up that year rather than relying on a fixed table. Use the year-aware tool to check your birthday against your birth year.
  5. Does your birthday land on that year's switch day? Your birth time decides the sign, and the checker asks for it only when needed.
  6. Do you lack a birth time for a switch-day birthday? The answer remains open between Aquarius and Pisces. The guide born on the cusp? find your exact sign explains what to do next.

February Zodiac Questions, Answered

What zodiac sign is February 29?

February 29 is Pisces in every leap year, with no ambiguity. It falls at least ten days after the Aquarius-Pisces switch and roughly three weeks before Pisces ends, making it a mid-sign date rather than a boundary date.

Is February 18 Aquarius or Pisces?

February 18 can be Aquarius or Pisces depending on the birth year. It has been the switch day in most recent years, so many birthdays on that date fall under Pisces, but the year settles the date and the birth time settles a birthday on the switch itself. Use the tool to check your birthday against your birth year rather than guessing.

Why do some sites say Pisces starts on February 19 and others say February 18?

Fixed tables print one date for every year, while the actual switch has landed on February 18 or 19 depending on the year.

In most recent years it fell on February 18, so tables that always print February 19 lag behind the recent pattern; read why zodiac sign dates change every year for the mechanism.

Does a leap year change your zodiac sign?

No, a leap year does not automatically change your zodiac sign.

Leap day nudges the switch within the February 18-19 window, which can matter for birthdays on those two dates, but it does nothing to the February 29 answer because that date is comfortably inside Pisces.

I was born in February - how do I know for sure which sign I am?

February 1-17 is Aquarius, while February 20 through the end of the month is Pisces, with no lookup needed. Only February 18 and 19 require your birth year, and the year-aware checker handles those dates in one step.
