Zodiac Signs in May: Taurus or Gemini

May has two zodiac signs: Taurus's exact dates by year cover the first part of the month, and Gemini's exact dates by year take over around May 20 or 21.

The exact switch day depends on the birth year, so I use the May 20-21 window rather than pretending one date works every year. I don't read daily horoscopes; I like the zodiac as a mirror, not a map.

Even so, if we are going to use these labels for entertainment or self-reflection, I think we should get the calendar part right.

The Short Answer: Taurus Until the May 20-21 Switch, Then Gemini

Taurus covers May 1 through the Taurus-to-Gemini switch, having begun during the second half of April. Gemini begins at that switch and continues through May 31, then carries on into June.

The useful answer is therefore: Taurus until the May 20-21 switch, then Gemini. Many printed charts shorten this to "Taurus April 20-May 20, Gemini May 21-June 20." That familiar range works as a convention, but it is not a fact for every birth year.

The handover can occur on either date in the May 20-21 window, which matters if your birthday falls on one of those two days. For birthdays elsewhere in May, the answer is settled by the date alone.

Is May 20 or May 21 the Cutoff?

Both dates can be correct in different years.

Across 2016-2030, using US Eastern time, the site's canonical table confirms that the Sun's entry into Gemini falls on May 20 in 11 of the 14 verified years and on May 21 in three: 2019, 2023, and 2027.

The 2028 entry is still pending verification, so it is not included in that count.

That makes the widely printed May 21 cutoff the minority case across the confirmed years, not the rule. I find charts that print one confident date without asking for a birth year irritating (tidy is not the same as exact), though I see the fixed date as rounding rather than deception.

Every sign boundary shifts by about a day from year to year because the solar year does not fit evenly into the calendar year, and leap day resets the difference; the fuller explanation belongs on why the switch date moves by about a day.

Time zones can also change the date shown on a calendar: the switch is one instant, so in several years, including 2018, 2022, and 2026, it falls on May 20 in US Eastern time but May 21 in UTC. That is why May 20-21 is an honest two-day window for a general guide. A precise answer for a boundary birthday needs the year and, when the birthday is the switch day, the birth time.

If you were born on May 20 or 21, a month-only chart cannot give you a reliable verdict. In a given year, the Sun entered Gemini on a specific day. If that date matches your birthday, Gemini applies after the switch moment and Taurus applies before it.
