Zodiac Signs in August: Leo or Virgo

August has two zodiac signs: Leo's exact dates by year cover the first three weeks, and Virgo's exact dates by year take over around August 22 or 23.

The exact switch day depends on the birth year, so I use the honest August 22-23 window instead of pretending one date works every year.

I don't read daily horoscopes; I like the zodiac as a mirror, not a map. Even with that light approach, I want the calendar part to be accurate.

If your birthday falls on either boundary date, a year-aware checker gives you a better answer than a fixed range printed on a mug.

The Short Answer: Leo Until the August 22-23 Switch, Then Virgo

Leo covers August 1 through the August 22-23 switch, having begun during the second half of July. Virgo begins at that switch and continues through August 31, then carries on into September.

The familiar shorthand usually prints Leo as July 23-August 22 and Virgo as August 23-September 22. That is a useful convention, not a year-specific fact. The actual switch can land on either August 22 or August 23, depending on the year and the time zone in which the moment is recorded.

For birthdays from August 1-21, the date alone settles Leo. For birthdays from August 24-31, the date alone settles Virgo. August 22 and 23 are the dates that require a closer check.

August's Two Signs at a Glance

August begins with Leo carried over from July and ends with Virgo continuing toward September. The table keeps both edges visible without turning the usual boundary windows into fixed dates.

Sign Which part of August Boundary window Its own dates page
Leo August 1 through the switch Starts July 22-23, carried over from July; ends August 22-23 Leo's exact dates by year
Virgo From the switch through August 31 and on into September Starts August 22-23; ends September 22-23 Virgo's exact dates by year

Leo's earlier portion appears in July's Leo half. Virgo continues in where Virgo goes next, including the September 22-23 window at its far edge. Those neighboring month pages are useful when an August-only chart leaves the full span unclear.

Is August 22 or August 23 the Cutoff?

Both dates can be correct, but in different years. Across 2016-2030, measured in US Eastern time, the Leo-to-Virgo switch falls on August 22 in eleven of the fifteen years. It falls on August 23 in four: 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2027.

That makes the widely copied statement "Virgo starts August 23" the exception rather than the rule across those recent years in US time. It also means August 22 cannot reliably be labeled the last day of Leo. A person born that day may fall on either side, and the year must come first before any answer can be narrowed further.

I find one-date charts irritating when they never ask for a birth year. They are not lying so much as rounding, but that rounding can produce the wrong answer for the person standing directly on the boundary.

Every sign boundary shifts by about a day from year to year because the solar year does not fit the calendar year evenly and leap day resets the difference; here is why the switch date moves by about a day.

The switch itself is one instant, so in some years it falls late on August 22 in US Eastern time while that same instant already reads August 23 in UTC. That time-zone effect is why a two-day window is more truthful on a general month page.

Born on August 22 or 23? Check Your Birth Year

If you were born on August 22 or 23, do not accept a verdict that ignores your birth year. In a given year, the Sun entered Virgo on a specific day. If that was your birthday, Virgo applies unless you were born before the switch moment, when Leo still applies.

This page cannot resolve an individual date-and-year pair without the information needed to place the birth on the correct side. Use the calculator to check your exact birth year. It asks for the year because the boundary moves, and it identifies a year as pending rather than inventing an answer when the underlying information is incomplete.

Which August sign is yours, in three steps

  1. Is your birthday August 1-21? Your sign is Leo, settled by the calendar date alone. You do not need a birth year for this part of August; continue to the Leo page for its own date information.
  2. Is your birthday August 24-31? Your sign is Virgo, also settled by the date alone. Continue to the Virgo page for its complete date coverage.
  3. Is your birthday August 22 or August 23? Your birth year decides which day contains the switch. If you were born on that year's switch day, your birth time determines whether the birth came before or after it. Enter the date and year in the checker instead of relying on a fixed chart.

Readers who want the reasoning rather than only the result can read about being born on a boundary day. Without the year, the answer remains open. No guess is better than a confident wrong label.

August in the Zodiac Calendar

August sits in the middle of a continuous calendar sequence. Leo arrives from July, crosses into August, and gives way during the August 22-23 window; July's Leo half shows where that span begins.

Virgo starts at the August switch, fills the rest of the month, and continues into where Virgo goes next. The September page picks up the calendar sequence without requiring August to cover its neighboring month's details.

Every calendar month contains portions of two zodiac signs, with a boundary window between them. To compare August with the rest of the year, see all 12 signs by month.

August Zodiac Questions, Answered

What zodiac signs are in August?

Leo covers August through the August 22-23 switch, followed by Virgo for the rest of the month.

I was born on August 22 - am I Leo or Virgo?

Your birth year settles which sign applies, and if August 22 was the switch day that year, your birth time settles which side you were born on. Across 2016-2030, the Sun had already entered Virgo during August 22 in US Eastern time in eleven of fifteen years, which is more often than fixed charts suggest. Check instead of assuming.

My birthday is August 23. Does the year really change the answer?

Yes. In most years from 2016-2030, the switch had already happened on August 22, but in 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2027 it fell on August 23 in US Eastern time. For those four years, the birth time determines the side of the boundary, so use the checker rather than guessing.

Why do so many charts say Virgo starts August 23?

A fixed date is easy to print and usually close enough for a general chart, but it is a convention rather than a fact for every year. In US time, August 23 is the less common switch date across 2016-2030. That is why this page gives August 22-23 as a window.

Is August 22 the last day of Leo?

Only when the switch falls on August 23. In most recent years covered here, the Sun entered Virgo during August 22 in US Eastern time, so that date can contain the boundary itself. Use the calculator for a year-specific answer.

I know my August sign - where do I read what it actually means?

Go to the sign's own page, which includes its dates by year and its boundary checker. This page answers the calendar question only; use the Leo or Virgo link in the table to continue.
