Zodiac Signs by Season: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter

Spring is Aries, Taurus and Gemini.
Summer is Cancer, Leo and Virgo.
Fall is Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius.
Winter is Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
The table below adds the season windows; I kept this page short because that's the whole map.
Zodiac Signs by Season at a Glance
| Season | Opens at | Approximate window | The three signs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March equinox | about March 20 - about June 20 | Aries, Taurus, Gemini |
| Summer | June solstice | about June 20-21 - about September 22 | Cancer, Leo, Virgo |
| Fall | September equinox | about September 22-23 - about December 21 | Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius |
| Winter | December solstice | about December 21 - about March 20 | Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces |
The season names are the Northern Hemisphere ones used in the United States. Each season holds exactly three signs because the twelve signs wrap the wheel in order, and the four anchors - the two equinoxes and the two solstices - divide the year evenly. Printed sign windows can shift by about a day between years, which is why the table uses approximate dates rather than fixed ones.
Each season starts with what's called a cardinal sign - Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn - which is the structural reason the grouping exists at all. The mechanism behind that clock is covered on its own page; here I'm just handing you the table.
Sign-to-season lookup:
- Aries → spring, opens it
- Taurus → spring, the middle
- Gemini → spring, closes it
- Cancer → summer, opens it
- Leo → summer, the middle
- Virgo → summer, closes it
- Libra → fall, opens it
- Scorpio → fall, the middle
- Sagittarius → fall, closes it
- Capricorn → winter, opens it
- Aquarius → winter, the middle
- Pisces → winter, closes it
Spring Signs: Aries, Taurus and Gemini
Spring runs from the March equinox to the June solstice. Aries opens the season, Taurus holds the middle, and Gemini closes it. The arc covers most of March, all of April and May, and the first two-thirds of June.
March is the split month here - the first half belongs to winter, and the second half starts spring at the equinox. Opening the season means Aries is the cardinal sign anchored at the March equinox, which is the structural entry point to the spring quarter of the wheel.
Summer Signs: Cancer, Leo and Virgo
Summer runs from the June solstice to the September equinox. Cancer opens the season, Leo holds the middle, and Virgo closes it. This arc covers the last third of June, all of July and August, and most of September.
June and September are the split months - June's first two-thirds belong to spring, and September's last third belongs to fall. Cancer, Leo and Virgo are the three signs that answer the site's single best-performing historical query: what are the summer astrological signs.
Fall Signs: Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius
Fall runs from the September equinox to the December solstice. Libra opens the season, Scorpio holds the middle, and Sagittarius closes it. The arc covers the last week of September, all of October and November, and the first two-thirds of December.
US readers will also see this season called autumn - I use fall as the site's term. September and December are the split months here. Libra anchors the September equinox, which makes it the cardinal sign that opens the fall quarter.
Winter Signs: Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces
Winter runs from the December solstice to the March equinox. Capricorn opens the season, Aquarius holds the middle, and Pisces closes it.
This is the one season that crosses the New Year - a December-born reader and a February-born reader are in the same seasonal group. December and March are the split months. The arc covers the last third of December, all of January and February, and the first two-thirds of March.
Why Four Months Get Split in Half
The four anchors - the March and September equinoxes, the June and December solstices - fall in the second half of their months. March, June, September and December each belong to two seasons, and a birthday in one of them cannot be resolved by the month alone.
I once watched somebody born June 20 get three different answers from three different sites, because each printed one fixed date instead of a per-year table. That's the friction this checklist exists to remove.
If your birthday is in March, June, September or December:
- Your month spans two seasons, so the month alone does not settle which one you're in.
- Check your exact date against your birth year - the boundary moves by about a day between years.
- Run your birth date, and if you have it, your birth time, through the zodiac sign calculator. Read the matching month page for the year-by-year detail.
No single printed date settles it. The March, June, September and December pages carry the boundary years individually.
If You Were Born South of the Equator
South of the equator the seasons run opposite, and a small number of tropical astrologers flip the frame there, treating Libra as the spring-equinox sign. Your sun sign itself does not change - only the season label attached to it. The mapping above uses the Northern Hemisphere frame that the United States follows.
Questions Readers Ask About Zodiac Seasons
What are the summer zodiac signs?
Cancer, Leo and Virgo, in that order. They cover the arc from the June solstice to the September equinox, which runs from about June 20-21 to about September 22. Cancer opens summer, Leo holds the middle, and Virgo closes it.
My birthday is June 20 - am I a spring sign or a summer sign?
It depends on the exact year, because the solstice moves by about a day between years. Run your birth date through the zodiac sign calculator rather than guessing, and check the June page for the year-by-year boundary. No single printed date settles it, which is why this page gives windows rather than fixed dates.
Do the zodiac seasons start on the same date every year?
No. About a day of drift is normal, which is why the table uses "about" in front of every boundary date. The reason is covered in detail on the page about why boundaries move between years.
I live in Australia - do I get the opposite sign?
No. The sun sign does not change; only the season label attached to it flips. A small number of tropical astrologers flip the frame accordingly, treating Libra as the spring-equinox sign in the Southern Hemisphere.
Does being a "summer sign" say anything about my personality?
It says when the Sun entered your sign, which is a calendar fact. I spent years assuming "summer sign" carried some temperamental meaning before noticing it only marks a three-month window on the wheel.
If you want the layer that traditional astrology does attach to season position, that's the modality axis - cardinal, fixed and mutable - which maps onto season start, middle and end.
If the season your birthday lands in is not obvious from the table, run the exact date through the sign calculator. If you now want the layer underneath the grouping, take the season clock next. You can also explore the rest of zodiac basics to see how the wheel is structured.
