What Zodiac Signs Are in January? Capricorn and Aquarius

January holds two zodiac signs: Capricorn through the January 19-20 switch, then Aquarius after it. January 1-18 and January 21-31 are settled every year; only the two switch dates depend on the year.
I give you the pattern here, while the checker handles your exact year. You can also see all 12 signs by month.
January Has Two Zodiac Signs: Capricorn, Then Aquarius
The direct answer is Capricorn first, Aquarius second. Pages that call January an "Aquarius month" skip most of the month, which is the sort of lazy shortcut that bothers me.
Capricorn holds about the first 19 days. Aquarius covers the remaining 11 or 12, so most January birthdays fall under Capricorn rather than Aquarius. For year-specific boundaries, use Capricorn's exact dates by year or Aquarius's exact dates by year.
| Birthday | Zodiac sign | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| January 1-18 | Capricorn | Settled in every year we cover; the season opened at the December solstice of the previous year. |
| January 19 | Capricorn or Aquarius | The year decides, and if the switch falls that day, the hour does. |
| January 20 | Aquarius or, in some years, still Capricorn until the switch | The same rule applies in reverse: the year and, on the switch day, the hour decide. |
| January 21-31 | Aquarius | Settled in every year we cover. |
Those middle two rows are why I use a January 19-20 window instead of assigning either date to one sign in every year.
Where the January Switch Falls: the 19th or the 20th
The Sun leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius on January 19 or January 20, depending on the year. Both dates are normal. Across the years covered by this site's canonical table, the 19th comes up a little more often than the 20th.
On the switch day itself, the hour decides. A bare date such as "January 19 birthday" does not contain enough information for an honest answer. I have seen a January 19 birthday in my life labeled both ways by different websites in the same week (neither site asked for a year or time).
That contradiction sent me to the year-by-year tables in the first place.
The date shifts because the calendar year and the Sun's year are a few hours out of step, so the boundary moves a little later until a leap day pulls it back; here is why the boundary moves.
Dates on this page use US Eastern time. In another time zone, the same switch moment can fall on the next calendar date, and the checker shows both dates.
Myth: January is an Aquarius month.
Fact: Most of January is Capricorn; Aquarius gets the final 11 or 12 days.
Myth: The zodiac year restarts with the calendar year.
Fact: Capricorn's season opened at the December solstice of the previous year. January 1 does not change the sign.
Myth: Aquarius always starts on January 20.
Fact: It starts on January 19 in plenty of years. Both dates are normal, and the year decides.
If your birthday is near the switch, check your exact birth year rather than trusting a flat date-range graphic.
Why Capricorn's January Days Belong to a Season That Started Last Year
Capricorn's season does not begin in January. It opened at the December solstice of the previous calendar year, on December 21 in US Eastern time in every year the site's table resolves. In UTC and European local time, that same moment appears as December 22 in some years.
That means someone born on January 8 shares a zodiac season with people born just before Christmas. To trace the beginning of that January birthday's season, look backward to the previous December, not forward to the coming December.
I assumed for years that the zodiac year turned over when the calendar did. It does not, and matching a January birthday to the coming December instead of the previous one is the bit of calendar arithmetic I still double-check. Nothing resets on January 1; the calendar year and the zodiac cycle simply are not the same clock.
This is why asking whether Capricorn is a December sign or a January sign produces the mildly annoying but accurate answer: both.
December's half of the Capricorn season supplies the month context, while Capricorn's exact dates by year gives the precise December boundary for a particular year.
Which Sign Is My January Birthday?
Most January dates need no special lookup. I sort them into four cases:
- Born January 1-18: Your Sun sign is Capricorn in every year covered by the table. Its season started in the previous December.
- Born January 21-31: Your Sun sign is Aquarius in every covered year. No boundary lookup is needed.
- Born January 19 or 20: Your birth year decides where the switch falls. Enter the date and year to check your exact birth year.
- Born on January 19 or 20 without a known birth time: The honest answer stays open until you find the time. The checker gives the switch moment for your year, showing exactly what the missing information would settle.
I do not call one sign "probable" when the birth time is missing on a switch day. The hour decides, and guessing does not improve the answer. If the word "cusp" is causing confusion, the guide for anyone born on a boundary day walks through the question without treating two signs as a hybrid identity.
What the Month Alone Does Not Tell You
Knowing that January runs from Capricorn into Aquarius tells you which sign page to open next. It does not provide a personality readout, explain someone's choices, or predict what will happen to them.
Traditional symbolic descriptions are for entertainment and self-reflection, not science; a Sun sign is one part of a much larger chart. I don't read daily horoscopes - I like the zodiac as a mirror, not a map. That distinction lets me enjoy the language without pretending a calendar boundary can sum up a person.
The linked Capricorn and Aquarius pages cover the traditional descriptions associated with each sign. For the limits of those claims, I recommend what astrology can and can't tell you. This page has the narrower job of getting the January calendar fact right.
What Comes Before and After January
Move one month backward and December is where Capricorn's season begins. The page on December's half of the Capricorn season continues that side of the calendar without forcing January to carry December's answer too.
Move forward and February begins with Aquarius before the handoff to Pisces. Use what comes after Aquarius for that next step.

January Zodiac FAQ
Is January 19 a Capricorn or an Aquarius birthday?
It depends on the year, and if the switch occurs that day, the hour decides too. In some years the Sun has entered Aquarius on January 19; in others it remains in Capricorn until January 20. You can check your exact birth year for the correct boundary.
What sign is a January 1 birthday?
January 1 is Capricorn in every year covered by the site's table. That birthday belongs to a season that opened at the December solstice, before New Year's Day, rather than to a new season beginning with the calendar year.
Why does Capricorn's season start in December if my birthday is in January?
The zodiac cycle does not restart with the calendar year. Capricorn is the sign whose season crosses New Year's Day, so its January dates continue a season opened the previous month. December's half of the Capricorn season shows where that stretch begins.
Can I be both Capricorn and Aquarius if I was born on the switch day?
No, the Sun is in exactly one sign at any given moment. "Cusp" is common shorthand for a birthday near the boundary, but the year and hour determine which sign applies. Read the guide for anyone born on a boundary day if you need the full process.
Does knowing my January sign tell me anything about my personality?
No, the calendar answer only tells you which sign page to read next. Traditional descriptions are intended for entertainment and self-reflection, not science, and a Sun sign cannot describe a whole person. I explain that distinction in what astrology can and can't tell you.
Sources and What This Page Is
The date pattern comes from the site's canonical ingress table, compiled by comparing US Eastern and UTC source tables. The underlying boundary data is refreshed annually. This is an editorial reference page, not a personal reading.
If your birthday lands on January 19 or 20, put your birth year into the checker - it takes ten seconds and settles the argument; if it doesn't, you already have your answer above.
