The zodiac sign dates chart

The western tropical zodiac, the system behind nearly every date table you have seen in the US, divides the Sun's annual path into twelve equal slices of 30 degrees. The wheel is anchored to the seasons: zero degrees of Aries is defined as the Sun's position at the March equinox.
People use zodiac sign, sun sign, star sign, and birth sign interchangeably here. Each means the sign the Sun occupied when you were born.
These are the usual windows:
| Sign | Typical window | Element |
|---|---|---|
| Aries dates | typically March 21 - April 19 | Fire |
| Taurus dates | typically April 20 - May 20 | Earth |
| Gemini dates | typically May 21 - June 20 | Air |
| Cancer dates | typically June 21 - July 22 | Water |
| Leo dates | typically July 23 - August 22 | Fire |
| Virgo dates | typically August 23 - September 22 | Earth |
| Libra dates | typically September 23 - October 22 | Air |
| Scorpio dates | typically October 23 - November 21 | Water |
| Sagittarius dates | typically November 22 - December 21 | Fire |
| Capricorn dates | typically December 22 - January 19 | Earth |
| Aquarius dates | typically January 20 - February 18 | Air |
| Pisces dates | typically February 19 - March 20 | Water |
The word "typically" matters. In most years, the first and last date of a sign stays within this pattern. On a boundary, though, the calendar date can shift by a day, and a time zone can change which local date you see.
The chart cannot settle a particular birthday without the birth year. Exact boundary moments, along with the time zone and named source, appear on each sign's page. That is where a question such as "was I a Cancer or a Leo?" gets its actual answer.
The traditional framework behind the chart has three main divisions. Fire signs - Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius - represent inspiration and action. Earth signs - Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn - represent practicality and groundedness.
Air signs - Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius - are associated with communication and intellect. Water signs - Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces - are associated with emotion and intuition.
Modalities describe each sign's place in its season. Cardinal signs begin a season, fixed signs sustain it, and mutable signs close it out. Polarity divides the signs into six active and six receptive signs.
Older books call these masculine and feminine, while current English references increasingly use active and receptive.
Rulership is one place where traditions differ. Most signs have one ruling planet in common use, while Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces each have two: Mars and Pluto, Saturn and Uranus, and Jupiter and Neptune. A careful reference page gives both versions.
The four cardinal signs begin at astronomical anchors: Aries at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox, and Capricorn at the December solstice. The Cancer dates and Capricorn dates pages show how those anchors affect an individual verdict.
Zodiac signs by month
Every calendar month contains part of two signs, because a sign season starts partway through one month and ends partway through the next. Capricorn is the one that carries across the calendar-year turn, running from the December solstice into January.
The month-by-month view now lives on its own page: Zodiac Signs by Month: The Full-Year Zodiac Calendar holds all twelve months in one table with the switch window for each one, and each month has its own page underneath it.
If your month question is really a day question, such as "is February 18 Aquarius or Pisces," you have a boundary-day question. The answer depends on your birth year. The Aquarius dates and Pisces dates pages list the verified year-specific verdicts.
Why zodiac sign dates change every year
The calendar and the seasonal year do not have the same length. A tropical year, measured from one equinox to the next, lasts about 365.2422 days, while the calendar uses whole days. Each common year moves seasonal markers and the sign boundaries attached to them about six hours later.
A leap day pulls the schedule back by roughly eighteen hours.
That cycle keeps each boundary inside a narrow two-to-three-day range. It is why a date chart should label its windows "typically" instead of presenting every boundary as permanent.
The pattern is visible in the records. Sagittarius began on November 21 in 2024, but on November 22 in 2026 and again on November 22 in 2029. The March equinox, which marks Aries' beginning, has fallen on March 19 or 20 in the mainland US throughout this century so far.
The next March 21 is not due until 2101; in Universal Time, the century's extremes run from March 19 in 2096 to March 21 in 2003.
The seasons are not equal in length, either. Because Earth moves faster when it is closer to the Sun, the March-to-September half of the year lasts about 186 days, while the September-to-March half lasts about 179. The six signs from Libra through Pisces therefore occupy about a week less time overall than the six from Aries through Virgo.
Their zodiac slices are equal in degrees, but not in days.
Time zones add another layer. A boundary that falls on the evening of August 22 in North America may already be August 23 in UTC. That happened at Virgo's start in 2026, which is why our Virgo dates page gives both calendar dates.
In the same year, the Sun entered Libra on September 22 in the Eastern time zone and September 23 in UTC. A printed table that says "Libra: from September 23" without a year or zone leaves out information your birth-date verdict needs.
Mid-window birthdays do not face this problem. April 2 has been Aries and will remain Aries; October 8 likewise remains Libra. Boundary dates are different: the year determines the switch date, and the hour can matter when the switch occurs on your birthday.

Cusp dates explained

"I was born on the cusp, so I'm both." The idea is understandable. Birthday books gave certain boundary dates memorable names, including the "Cusp of Sensitivity" for the February 18-ish group, and the labels can make a switch day sound like an official category.
The tropical system does not treat it that way. The Sun occupies one sign at any instant. A birthday on a boundary means the switch happened near that date, not that the person belongs to two signs.
Professional astrologers quoted in mainstream press describe the system in the same terms: cusp hybridity is not a real category within the tropical zodiac.
The practical question is when the switch occurred. Your birth year identifies the relevant boundary date. If you were born on that date itself, your birth hour determines the sign: before the Sun crossed the boundary, you belong to the earlier sign; after it, to the later one.
Without a birth time, the honest answer may remain open.
For a reliable check, find your year's boundary date on the relevant sign page, then compare it with your birthday. If the dates match, look for your birth time on an official record. A birth certificate is more dependable than family memory.

Your tropical sign vs the constellations
Stories claiming that the zodiac "shifted" usually blur two systems. The tropical zodiac is tied to the seasons, not to the visible star patterns. Earth's axis slowly wobbles through a cycle of about 26,000 years.
By most current estimates, that movement has carried the constellations about 24 degrees, nearly a full sign, from the positions used when Babylonian astronomers standardized the twelve-sign grid around 500 BCE.
The tropical system keeps twelve equal signs. It also leaves out Ophiuchus as a sign, deliberately preserving that twelve-part structure. Astronomical constellation boundaries do not follow the same tidy pattern.
Tropically, the Sun is in Aries from about March 21 to April 19; astronomically, it crosses the Aries constellation roughly from April 19 to May 14. Both statements can be correct because they answer different questions.
The constellation route is uneven, too. The Sun spends about a week crossing Scorpius and more than six weeks in Virgo, while every tropical sign covers exactly 30 degrees. The "your sign changed" lists are sidereal, or constellation-position, dates.
This site does not print those tables. The signs vs constellations guide explains the distinction in more detail.
How to spot a zodiac date table you can trust
Astrology content has no regulator, license, or credential that certifies a date table. I claim none of those. I am an editor who checks numbers, not an astrologer.
A table should still show enough of its work for you to check whether a birthday verdict is sound.
Look for these warning signs:
- No year anywhere. "Libra: September 23 - October 22" without a year is a guess presented as a fixed rule.
- No time zone, even though some boundaries fall on different calendar dates in UTC and North America. Virgo's 2026 start is one example.
- A window that differs from ephemeris tables by a full day at some boundaries. Several ranking listicles do this in 2026 and again around 2030.
- Compatibility presented as a guarantee, or trait copy framed as science or diagnosis. Overclaiming in one section is a warning about the site's handling of precision elsewhere.
- Minute-level times with no named source. Even established almanacs have disagreed about the exact minute of the 2026 June solstice, so a named authority is necessary for a time to be checkable.
A dependable table usually identifies the year, gives the boundary time with its time zone, names an authority such as an astronomical almanac or observatory table, and explains its cusp rule. The rule should be straightforward: the year and hour decide a boundary birthday, and the tropical system assigns one sign.
Use this four-step check for your own birthday:
- Decide whether the date is mid-window or near a boundary. A mid-window date is settled; a boundary date needs more care.
- For a boundary date, find the exact switch date for your birth year on the relevant sign page.
- If you were born on the switch date, find your birth time on an official record.
- Enter the information in the zodiac sign calculator or the checker on our home page. Both run in your browser, and neither stores or sends what you enter.
