A crab on wet sand under a rising moon - the Crab, symbol of Cancer, ruled by the Moon

Cancer is the most looked-up zodiac window on this site, and the one whose start is pinned to the sky itself.

The sign opens at the June solstice - the instant the Sun reaches 90° tropical longitude - so both its edges hop by year and hour.

I'll give you the exact verdict for your birth year below, minute by minute, with every claim carrying a source.

You can check the 12 zodiac signs for the full wheel, or jump straight to the year table and the birthday checker here.

Cancer at a Glance: Dates, Element, Ruler, and Symbol

Cancer typically runs June 21 through July 22. In 2026 the Sun entered Cancer on June 21 at 4:24 AM Eastern, and left it when it entered Leo on July 22 at 3:13 PM Eastern.

  • Element: Water
  • Modality: Cardinal
  • Polarity: Receptive (classically negative/feminine; modern references prefer active/receptive)
  • Ruler: The Moon - in both modern and classical schemes, unlike Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces where the two traditions differ
  • Symbol: The Crab
  • Glyph: ♋ (two curled shapes facing one another, evoking the claws)
  • Opposite sign: Capricorn
  • Ecliptic span: 90° - 120°

Was I a Cancer in My Birth Year?

The checker below takes your birth date and year. If you add the time of day, it closes the verdict on boundary days. Without a time, I'll tell you the hour the switch happened and leave the answer open - never "most likely."

Born on a sign-change day? - optional; it only tightens switch-day verdicts.

Runs in your browser - your birth date is never stored or sent.

Cancer Boundary Dates by Year: June 20-21 and July 22-23

Cancer can start on June 20 or June 21, depending on the year. It ended on July 22 in every covered year from 2016 through 2030 in Eastern time, though the hour varies widely.

The June 20-21 Boundary: Gemini or Cancer

Cancer started June 20 in 2016, 2020, 2021, 2024, 2025 and 2029.

It started June 21 in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2026, 2027 and 2030. (2028 is provisionally June 20, pending annual verification.) The start IS the solstice instant, and the solstice hops the calendar.

Here's the case that surprises people: in 2026 the Sun entered Cancer on June 21 at 4:24 AM Eastern. A June 21 birth before that moment is still Gemini. The counter-case: in 2025 Cancer began June 20 at 10:42 PM Eastern, so a late-evening June 20 birth that year is already Cancer.

When two almanacs disagree

I cross-check every date on this page against multiple sources. In 2026 I found a six-hour discrepancy that sits exactly where real birthdays fall. The Old Farmer's Almanac website prints the June 2026 solstice at 02:24 UTC.

The USNO-derived value, matched against timeanddate.com and the Wikipedia equinox table transcribed from the Astronomical Almanac, is 08:25 UTC (4:24 AM Eastern). That's the value I keep - it's the observatory standard - but the gap matters because it would flip late-evening June 20, 2026 births from Gemini to Cancer depending on which table you trust.

This is why every moment on this page carries a minute, a timezone and a source.

Three boundary verdicts, worked through

  1. Born June 21, 2026 at 2:00 AM Eastern - before the switch (Cancer begins June 21 at 4:24 AM Eastern that year) - Gemini. See Gemini dates for the other side of that line. Add your birth time in the checker and the verdict closes.

  2. Born June 20, 2025 at 11:30 PM Eastern - after the switch (Cancer began June 20 at 10:42 PM Eastern that year) - Cancer. A June 20 birth can be Cancer. Add your birth time in the checker and the verdict closes.

  3. Born July 22, 2026 at 5:00 PM Eastern - after the switch (Leo begins July 22 at 3:13 PM Eastern) - Leo. See Leo dates for the Leo side of that boundary. Add your birth time in the checker and the verdict closes.

The July 22-23 Boundary: Cancer or Leo

In every year I've covered - 2016 through 2030 - the Sun enters Leo on July 22 in Eastern time. The moment ranges from 3:44 AM (2024) to 10:50 PM (2019), so July 22 splits by the hour. July 23 is Leo all day.

Static tables that print "July 23" as Cancer's end date shift the window by a day. The table above shows the real switch time for your birth year.

Why the Cancer Dates Shift a Little Every Year

The tropical year is about 365.2422 days. Each boundary drifts about six hours later per year, then the leap day resets it about 18 hours earlier. Net effect: the solstice - and with it Cancer's start - stays inside a two- or three-day window (June 20/21 in Eastern time; July 22/23 at the other edge).

Water, Cardinal, the Moon: What Makes Cancer Cancer

Cardinal Water in Plain English

Water is the element of feeling and the private temperament. Cardinal is the modality that opens the season. Cancer initiates summer at the solstice, just as Aries initiates spring, Libra autumn and Capricorn winter.

Fixed sustains the season; mutable closes it.

Polarity is receptive. Classical vocabulary calls this negative, feminine or yin. Modern references increasingly prefer active/receptive.

The Moon in Both Ruler Traditions

Modern and classical schemes agree on the Moon for Cancer. That's not true for Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces, where the two traditions diverge. In tradition-language, ruled by the Moon means association with the fastest-moving body in the traditional scheme - rhythm, mood, the things that change by the hour.

I present this as vocabulary from the tradition, not science. The Sun sign is one piece of a much larger chart.

The Crab, the Glyph, and the 90-120° Stretch

In the tradition, the sign is named for Karkinos, the giant crab of the Greek telling placed among the stars by Hera. Cancer is Latin for crab. The glyph ♋ shows two curled shapes facing one another, evoking the claws.

Cancer runs from 90° to 120° of ecliptic longitude, counted from 0° Aries at the March equinox. The 90° point IS the June solstice, which is why the sign and the season share an anchor. Cancer and Capricorn form the opposite-sign pairing - solstice against solstice, cardinal water against cardinal earth.

Traditional Cancer Traits - Strengths and Shadow Sides

Cancer is traditionally described as nurturing, home-loving, intuitive, protective and loyal. Cafe Astrology phrases it as "attention turns to our nest - families, homes, safe and secure." The tradition's shadow side of the same coin: moody, overly sensitive, quick to retreat into the shell when hurt.

These are symbolic descriptions for entertainment and self-reflection, not science. The Sun sign is one part of a chart. I like the zodiac as a mirror, not a map - I take the "nurturing homebody" vocabulary as a lens for self-reflection, not a box I'm supposed to fit.

Cancer Compatibility: Traditional Associations, Honestly Hedged

The most common convention pairs water with earth and fire with air. In that convention, Cancer's associations lean toward the other water signs - Scorpio and Pisces - and the earth signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Capricorn is the traditional complementary opposite, same axis as the attributes block above.

References genuinely differ. These are associations, never guarantees, never a verdict on a real relationship. Synastry is not decided by Sun signs alone.

You can explore the pattern in depth at Cancer compatibility, or try the compatibility tool.

Cancer's Calendar: Late June to Late July

Cancer spans the ends of two calendar months - late June and late July - with a boundary day in each. June 20/21 is shared with Gemini, July 22/23 with Leo. The month-by-month tables live on the 12 zodiac signs hub.

Cancer FAQ

Is June 21 Cancer or Gemini?

Your birth year decides, and on that day the hour. In 2026 June 21 is Cancer from 4:24 AM Eastern onward, so an earlier-morning birth is Gemini. In 2024 June 21 was Cancer all day - the season had begun June 20 at 4:51 PM Eastern.

Use the checker above for your exact year.

Is July 22 Cancer or Leo?

In every covered year from 2016 through 2030, Leo begins on July 22 in Eastern time. In 2026 Cancer lasts until 3:13 PM Eastern that day; Leo after. July 23 is Leo all day.

Tables printing "July 23" as Cancer's end shift the window by a day. Check the year table above for your birth year's switch time.

Why does Cancer season start on the summer solstice?

The tropical zodiac counts longitude from the March equinox point. Cancer begins at 90°, and the Sun reaches 90° at the June solstice - sign and season share the anchor. That's also why the start date hops between June 20 and 21: the solstice moment drifts about six hours later each year, then the leap day resets it.

What does cardinal mean?

Cardinal initiates the season, fixed sustains it, mutable closes it. Cancer is the cardinal water sign that opens summer. The pattern repeats around the wheel: Aries opens spring, Libra autumn, Capricorn winter.

Am I really two signs if I was born on the Gemini-Cancer cusp?

The Sun occupies exactly one sign at any instant. Your birth year - and on the boundary day, the hour - decides which. You're never "both."

Check the table or the tool above for the verdict in your year. You can also read more at cusp dates explained.

Are Cancer traits scientific?

No. These are traditional symbolic descriptions for entertainment and self-reflection. The Sun sign is one part of a much larger chart, never a tool for judging people. See what astrology can and can't tell you for the full framing.

Does the birthday checker store my birth date?

No. Everything runs in the browser. Birth data is never stored or sent.

Sources and What This Page Is (and Isn't)

I write about the tropical zodiac as a tool for entertainment and self-reflection - a mirror, not a map. I don't read daily horoscopes and I don't make predictions of any kind. Traditional symbolic vocabulary is never science, never a verdict about a person, and never a guarantee about a relationship.

Every date and time on this page carries the year, the timezone and the named authority. Where authorities disagree - like the 2026 June solstice six-hour conflict between farmersalmanac.com and the USNO-derived standard - I say so and show which value I kept. Pending rows (2021 minutes, 2027, 2028) are labeled as pending, never printed as exact.
