The Full Zodiac Compatibility Chart: All 144 Sign Pairings

I spent years trying to memorize zodiac compatibility charts, and every chart I found asserted its 144 cells without explaining where a single one came from. This one is different.
It shows its arithmetic, which is why some cells read identically - a full 24 trine cells carry one reading, because they were derived from one rule, not written by hand.
The table below holds all 144 ordered sun-sign pairings, each read built from element and modality geometry rather than invented per-pair predictions.
This chart describes a traditional symbolic system for entertainment and self-reflection, not a predictor of relationship outcomes or any person's behavior.
How to Find Your Pairing in the Chart
The rows hold the first sign, the columns hold the second, and the cell at their intersection contains the traditional aspect family plus the whole-sign angle - for example, Trine · 120° or Square · 90°.
To check several pairings at once (a friend group, a family, siblings), scan an entire row: it shows how one sign reads against all twelve. The reading-family reference table sits directly under the chart, so a family name in a cell is one glance from its meaning. Run your own pairing through the calculator if you want to see one pairing at a time without the full matrix.
Reading a Row, a Column, and the Diagonal
A row traces one sign against all twelve. The diagonal - Aries with Aries, Taurus with Taurus, and so on through Pisces - always reads as a conjunction, a 0-degree same-position reading. That doesn't mean "perfect match"; it means the tradition assigns one shared position, nothing more.
The chart is symmetric. The cell at (Leo, Scorpio) equals the cell at (Scorpio, Leo), because none of the three tests that produce a family depends on order. A row and its matching column carry the same values, so checking both is checking the same cell twice.

The meaning of each family is in the table below. A challenging reading does not mean a doomed pairing - it describes an angle the tradition assigns to two signs, not a verdict about two real people.
| Family | Angle | Element relationship | Modality condition | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0° | Same sign | Same | The tradition reads the same-sign pairing as one shared position. |
| Trine | 120° | Same element | Different | The tradition reads easy shared flow. |
| Sextile | 60° | Same-polarity cross-element (fire + air, or earth + water) | Different | The tradition reads accessible cross-element flow. |
| Opposition | 180° | Same-polarity cross-element | Same | The tradition reads tension across a shared axis. |
| Square | 90° | Opposite-polarity cross-element (fire or air + earth or water) | Same | The tradition reads direct built-in friction. |
| Semi-sextile | 30° | Adjacent on wheel | Different | The tradition reads an off-angle adjustment. |
| Quincunx | 150° | Five signs apart on wheel | Different | The tradition reads an off-angle adjustment. |
How Every One of the 144 Cells Was Derived
The table runs one rule 144 times.
Two signs of the same element always trine; two signs of opposite polarity (fire or air paired with earth or water) and the same modality always square; two signs of the same polarity but different elements (fire with air, or earth with water) either sextile or oppose, depending on whether their modalities differ or match.
The coordinate grid below holds the only input the algorithm needs.
| Wheel position | Sign | Element | Modality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aries | Fire | Cardinal |
| 2 | Taurus | Earth | Fixed |
| 3 | Gemini | Air | Mutable |
| 4 | Cancer | Water | Cardinal |
| 5 | Leo | Fire | Fixed |
| 6 | Virgo | Earth | Mutable |
| 7 | Libra | Air | Cardinal |
| 8 | Scorpio | Water | Fixed |
| 9 | Sagittarius | Fire | Mutable |
| 10 | Capricorn | Earth | Cardinal |
| 11 | Aquarius | Air | Fixed |
| 12 | Pisces | Water | Mutable |
The derivation algorithm:
- If the two signs are identical, the family is Conjunction (0 degrees).
- If the two signs share an element, the family is Trine (120 degrees). Two different signs of one element always carry different modalities, so no further test is needed.
- If the two signs have different elements but the same polarity (fire pairs with air; earth pairs with water):
- If their modalities differ, the family is Sextile (60 degrees).
- If their modalities match, the family is Opposition (180 degrees).
- If the two signs have opposite polarity (fire or air paired with earth or water):
- If their modalities match, the family is Square (90 degrees).
- If their modalities differ, the family is an off-angle adjustment. If the two signs are adjacent on the wheel (one position apart), the family is Semi-sextile (30 degrees); otherwise, Quincunx (150 degrees).
The whole-sign angle in every cell is calculated as: angle = min( |posA - posB| , 12 - |posA - posB| ) × 30 degrees, where posA and posB are the wheel positions from the grid above.
Learn the two-question decoder behind every cell if you want to understand why the geometry works - the teaching of the aspect scheme itself lives there and isn't repeated here.
Cells of the same family carry the same words on purpose. A chart whose 144 cells all read differently is a chart whose cells were written, not derived.
What Each Reading Family Means
Conjunction (0 degrees): The tradition reads the same-sign pairing as one shared position. Aries with Aries, Taurus with Taurus, and so on through the twelve diagonal cells. It is not a verdict about compatibility - it names the zero-degree angle between a sign and itself.
Trine (120 degrees): The tradition reads easy shared flow. Every pair of signs from the same element lands here: Aries with Leo, Taurus with Virgo, Gemini with Libra, Cancer with Scorpio. Same-element signs sit four positions apart on the wheel, which gives the 120-degree angle, and they always carry different modalities.
Sextile (60 degrees): The tradition reads accessible cross-element flow. Fire paired with air (Aries with Gemini, Leo with Libra), or earth paired with water (Taurus with Cancer, Virgo with Scorpio), when their modalities differ. The polarity grouping treats fire and air as one family, earth and water as the other, and a sextile connects two elements of the same family whose modalities do not match.
Opposition (180 degrees): The tradition reads tension across a shared axis. Two signs of the same polarity (fire with air, or earth with water) and the same modality always sit six positions apart on the wheel, directly across from each other.
Aries opposes Libra (both cardinal), Taurus opposes Scorpio (both fixed), Gemini opposes Sagittarius (both mutable). Why some pairings read as difficult, and what that doesn't mean - the full deconstruction of worst-match framing sits there.
Square (90 degrees): The tradition reads direct built-in friction. Two signs of opposite polarity (fire or air paired with earth or water) and the same modality sit three positions apart on the wheel, forming a 90-degree angle.
Aries squares Cancer and Capricorn (all three cardinal), Taurus squares Leo and Aquarius (all three fixed), Gemini squares Virgo and Pisces (all three mutable). As with the opposition, a challenging reading describes an angle, not a doomed pairing.
Quincunx (150 degrees): The tradition reads an off-angle adjustment. Two signs of opposite polarity and different modalities that sit five positions apart on the wheel. Aries and Virgo, Taurus and Libra, Gemini and Scorpio - each pair shares neither element nor modality and lands 150 degrees from each other.
Semi-sextile (30 degrees): The tradition reads an off-angle adjustment. Two adjacent signs on the wheel, which always have opposite polarity, different elements and different modalities. Aries and Taurus, Gemini and Cancer, Leo and Virgo - twelve such pairs in the full cycle, each separated by one position and 30 degrees.
Check My Work: The Seven Counts That Add Up to 144
Because the derivation is mechanical, the finished table has exactly one correct family distribution. Count the cells yourself - if any number below is off, the chart has an error and I want to know.
| Family | Cells among the 144 | Why that count |
|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 12 | One diagonal cell per sign. |
| Trine | 24 | Four elements × three unordered same-element pairs × two orders. |
| Sextile | 24 | Twelve unordered same-polarity cross-element pairs with differing modalities × two orders. |
| Opposition | 12 | Six unordered opposite pairs (one per modality per polarity group) × two orders. |
| Square | 24 | Twelve unordered opposite-polarity same-modality pairs × two orders. |
| Semi-sextile | 24 | Twelve unordered adjacent-sign pairs × two orders. |
| Quincunx | 24 | Twelve unordered 150-degree pairs × two orders. |
| Total | 144 | 12 × 12 ordered cells. |
The symmetry check is the second audit tool: the cell at (A, B) always equals the cell at (B, A). None of the three branch tests depends on order, so the 144 ordered cells cover 66 distinct unordered pairings plus the 12 same-sign cells.
I'm publishing my own checksum because an asserted chart cannot be checked, and that is the whole problem with the genre. Used to think a chart whose cells all differed was precision; now I read it as a tell.
Three Cells, Worked Through
Watch me build three cells so you can build the other 141 yourself. Every step is arithmetic.
Gemini + Libra:
- Read both coordinates from the grid. Gemini: position 3, air, mutable. Libra: position 7, air, cardinal.
- Test element. Same element (air).
- Same element always produces a trine, so the family is Trine. No further test needed.
- Compute the angle. |3 - 7| = 4; 12 - 4 = 8; min(4, 8) = 4; 4 × 30 = 120 degrees.
- The cell reads: Trine · 120°.
Taurus + Cancer:
- Read both coordinates. Taurus: position 2, earth, fixed. Cancer: position 4, water, cardinal.
- Test element. Different elements (earth and water).
- Test polarity. Earth and water are the same polarity group. Test modality: fixed and cardinal differ.
- Different elements, same polarity, different modalities → Sextile.
- Compute the angle. |2 - 4| = 2; 12 - 2 = 10; min(2, 10) = 2; 2 × 30 = 60 degrees.
- The cell reads: Sextile · 60°.
Aries + Pisces:
- Read both coordinates. Aries: position 1, fire, cardinal. Pisces: position 12, water, mutable.
- Test element. Different elements (fire and water).
- Test polarity. Fire and water are opposite polarity. Test modality: cardinal and mutable differ.
- Opposite polarity, different modalities → off-angle family. Check wheel distance: |1 - 12| = 11; 12 - 11 = 1; min(11, 1) = 1. The signs are adjacent, so the family is Semi-sextile.
- Compute the angle. 1 × 30 = 30 degrees.
- The cell reads: Semi-sextile · 30°.
What This Chart Cannot Tell You
This artifact is not a measurement. There are no percentages here and there never will be - a percentage implies a measurement, and nothing in the zodiac tradition is measured. The chart reports which traditional aspect family a pairing falls into, which is all the tradition actually supplies.
A score system converts an angle into a verdict and then presents the verdict as if it were data. I won't do that.
The chart describes signs, not people. No cell in this table makes a claim about two real individuals, their prospects, or their behavior. What a compatibility reading can (and can't) actually tell you - the evidence register and the study record sit there.
This is a sun-sign matrix, which places each sign in a whole 30-degree bin. Chart-level practice applies narrower degree ranges to exact planetary positions, so a birth-chart reading operates at a different resolution than this table. Same tradition, different scope.
I don't read daily horoscopes. I like the zodiac as a mirror, not a map - a traditional symbolic system that can prompt a useful reflection, not a source of predictions about what someone will do.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Full Chart
Why do so many cells in this chart say exactly the same thing?
Because they were derived, not written. Every cell of one aspect family gets one fixed reading, so all 24 trine cells read alike, all 24 sextile cells read alike, and so on through the seven families. A chart whose 144 cells all differ was written by hand.
Does it matter which sign I put first?
No. The chart is symmetric - none of the three tests that produce a cell depends on order, so (Leo, Scorpio) and (Scorpio, Leo) hold the same value. Row or column, same answer.
How do I know this chart is complete and correct?
Count the families: 12 conjunctions, 24 trines, 24 sextiles, 12 oppositions, 24 squares, 24 semi-sextiles, 24 quincunxes, 144 total. Any other distribution means a cell is wrong. The symmetry check is the second tool - the cell at (A, B) always equals the cell at (B, A).
Where are the compatibility percentages or star ratings?
There are none, deliberately. A percentage implies a measurement, and nothing here is measured. The chart reports which traditional aspect family a pairing falls into, which is all the tradition actually supplies.
Can I use this chart for friends, siblings and family, not just romance?
Yes, and that is why the whole matrix is on one page - you can scan a row against all twelve signs at once. The readings describe traditional angles between signs, not relationship types.
Is there a printable or PDF version of this chart?
The chart is a plain table on the page, so it prints straight from your browser at any size. There is no download, no email signup and no gated file.
What does it mean if my pairing lands on a square or an opposition?
It means the two signs share a modality, which the tradition reads as built-in friction or tension across an axis. It is a description of an angle. Challenging does not mean doomed.
Found your pair in the chart? Run it through the compatibility calculator to see the same reading one pairing at a time - two sun signs, no birth year, no score at the end.
